Deaths at Christmas. Who to Call.
I’ve been a Funeral Director for 30 years. At least once a year I’m asked, how I feel about being a Funeral Director during the holidays and if it’s as awful as they think it must be. They’re also surprised when I say, Not at all, it’s the most rewarding time of the year.
Within the first week of mortuary school, a professor gives “the speech”. The one where they really try to explain and make sure you understand ALL the requirement of being a mortician or funeral director. One of main things is realizing that funeral homes do not shut their doors. We may physically leave the office, but we are always available to assist families. That’s the career we chose.
We are here to help
I hope you never have to make the call to us on the holidays, but should a death occur, or if you are advised to begin making funeral arrangements, don’t ever feel like you are inconveniencing us. That is why we are here.
Normally on holidays, funeral homes and cremation service companies like ours go to an on-call scenario. This enables us to spend the day with our family and we simply step away, when needed, to assist families.
For me, Christmas time is rewarding because it provides even more opportunity to help families who really need someone to talk to them and assist them through a very difficult time. Christmas is the Season for Giving and that’s exactly what I’m able to do. And what better gift than letting a family know their loved one is being treated with dignity and respect.
